Park Rules

Overview

The rules governing the parks of Lakewood are set in place by Lakewood Codified Ordinances, Chapter 905.

Park Hours

Lakewood Park: Sunrise – 11:00 PM
  • Skate Park: Closes at 9:00 PM
  • Basketball Court: Closes at 9:00 PM
  • Kid’s Cove Playground: Closes at 10:00 PM
  • Kiwanis Pavilion: Closes at 10:00 PM
  • Tennis Court: Closes at 10:00 PM
  • Restrooms: Kid’s Cove restrooms are open year-round, 8 AM to 10 PM. Skatepark restrooms are open May 1 to October 31, 8 AM to 10 PM.
Cove, Edwards, Kauffman, Madison, Wagar, and Webb Parks

Open from sunrise until one hour after sunset unless an approved program or activity is taking place on the athletic fields or in other areas by permit.

All Other Parks

Open from sunrise until one hour after sunset.

Restrooms

Kauffman Park and Madison Park restrooms are open May 1 – October 31, 8 AM to 10 PM.

All other park restrooms are open only for athletic events.

Conduct Rules

  • Parking is permitted in designated parking areas or as designated by police or park personnel for special events. No parking on grass anywhere in the parks.
  • No littering and no distribution of written/printed material except by permit issued by the Director of Public Works. Use of waste and recycling receptacles is requested.
  • No vending or commercial sales, including food trucks.
  • No climbing on trees, fences, or other structures in the park.
  • No games of chance, begging, or peddling allowed in the park.
  • No musical, theatrical, or other entertainment or parade or public demonstrations in the park without permit.
  • No disorderly conduct or loitering allowed in the parks.
  • No alcohol or intoxicated persons allowed in the parks.
  • No firearms, fireworks, firecrackers or explosives of any kind in the parks.
  • No swimming in Lake Erie or entering the areas north of the promenade walkway along the lake front at Lakewood Park.
  • There are designated certain areas for various athletics and may be restricted during certain times.
  • Baseball diamonds, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts and the skate park may not be rented for general public use. Access may be restricted during events programmed by the Lakewood Recreation Department or various city schools but are otherwise available for general public use on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Bike racks and bike corrals at all parks are for public use.

Dogs

Dogs permitted in the parks with the following restrictions:

  • Dogs must be on leashes of 6 feet or less in length – no retractable leashes
  • Dogs must remain at least 30 feet from playgrounds and are not permitted on athletic fields/courts, gardens, pavilions, and the handicap-access ramp at the lake front.
  • Control of dogs and clean up after dogs is required.
  • Dogs and owners shall yield the right-of-way to other path users.

No animals other than dogs are permitted in the parks.

The feeding or harming of wildlife is prohibited.

What Items are Allowed?

  • Charcoal and gas grills may be brought to the park with the maximum #1 propane tank. No grills may be set up inside pavilions, under a roof or canopy, on a deck or on the pavement.
  • No generators of any kind are permitted in the park.
  • No Bounce houses, inflatables, and/or other large structures are permitted in the park.
  • No motorized or electric bicycles are permitted on the multi-purpose pathway or in any area of a park other than the parking lot/bike parking area.
  • Tents – no larger than a 10×10 popup or canopy – are allowed in the park. Tents may not have sides or be enclosed and may not be staked to the ground. Only external weights may be used to secure tents in place.
  • Radios and small drones are permitted in the parks as long as they are not interfering with other persons’ enjoyment of the park.
