Public Safety Committee

Overview

Chair: Angelina Hamilton Steiner
Members: Cindy Strebig, Matt Bixenstine

The Public Safety Committee addresses matters that affect the safety and welfare of the citizens of Lakewood such as animal issues, crime prevention, fire response, disaster preparedness, and traffic management.

In 2024 the committee conducted a series of hearings to review and ultimately adopt the City’s Safety Action Plan and Active Transportation Plan. Both plans are the first of their kind to lay out a long-range vision for the City’s infrastructure, policy and programs with an emphasis on enhanced safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The committee also was one of two council committees that led the conversation around Lakewood’s response to the legalization of adult use marijuana, striking a balance by putting common-sense regulations on the books while respecting the voice of the majority of residents who voted in support of adult use.

In conducting its work, the Committee meets with the City’s Law Director, Police and Fire Chiefs, and other members of the administration. Members of the public are welcome to attend and speak at all meetings of the Committee.
