Backyard Hens

Overview

Keeping hens can be a rewarding and beneficial experience for homeowners. On top of providing fresh, local eggs, hens also provide fertilizer, eat pests, and help dig over your vegetable patch at the end of the season. Chickens eat biodegradable kitchen garbage like rusted lettuce, tomato tops, and corn husks.

Residents are permitted to keep backyard hens in Lakewood as long as the provisions outlined in L.C.O. Chapter 505.18 are followed. This ordinance requires hen owners to:

  • Live in an R1 or R2 zoning district;
  • Obtain a permit from the City;
  • Undergo an inspection of the hen coop/facility.
