Hydrant Flushing

Overview

In May and June each year, the Lakewood Fire Department flush and test fire hydrants as an ongoing hydrant and water maintenance program. This practice alleviates mineral deposits within the water mains and makes sure that water can flow in the event of a fire or emergency requiring hydrant use. While hydrants are open, the homes on that block may experience discolored water or a drop in water pressure. Hydrants are flushed between the hours of 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The LFD starts flushing on the north section of Lakewood and progresses south.

Precautions to Take During Flushing

  • Turn off any devices that automatically bring water into your home such as automatic ice makers, lawn irrigation systems, etc.
  • Avoid tasks that use water like running the dishwasher, doing laundry, or taking a bath/shower.

What To Do If You Have Discolored Water

If your water is discolored, wait one hour after you are sure hydrant flushing is completed. Then run cold water from the faucet that is closest to where the water supply enters your house (typically in the basement) for approximately fifteen (15) minutes. It should clear up. If the discolored water persists, contact the Lakewood Water Department at (216) 529-6820. The Water Department’s business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

When Will My Street Be Flushed?

Hydrant flushing does not run on a rigid schedule due to several external factors including the need to respond to emergencies, weather, and so on.
